Loading and Positioning: Empty capsule bodies are fed orderly into the filling station via a vibratory bowl or conveyor belt, and precisely positioned to ensure accurate handling of each capsule.
Precision Filling: High-precision metering devices inject a pre-set amount of coffee grounds into the capsule body. Weight consistency is paramount, as it directly affects the strength and flavour uniformity of every brewed cup.
Levelling and Compaction: After filling, mechanical devices level off excess coffee and may apply slight compaction. This ensures uniform density of the coffee within the capsule, providing consistent water resistance for the subsequent extraction process.
Film Lidding and Sealing: This is the most critical step. A composite aluminium foil membrane is placed over the opening of the filled capsule and sealed using heat sealing or ultrasonic welding technology. This seal must be robust to prevent gas leakage and moisture ingress during transportation and storage, yet designed to be easily pierced by the coffee machine's needle.
Nitrogen Flushing and Inspection: In many high-end machines, food-grade nitrogen is injected before sealing to displace oxygen inside the capsule. This step significantly slows the oxidation process of the coffee grounds, locking in fresh aroma. Finally, vision inspection systems or weight checks reject any non-conforming products, guaranteeing 100% quality of outgoing capsules.
The technical sophistication of the coffee capsule sealing and filling machine directly determines the final product's quality. It demands extremely high standards of precision, speed, and hygiene. An excellent machine can produce hundreds of capsules per minute, while maintaining minimal filling weight tolerances and ensuring secure, aesthetically pleasing seals.
